Eating Peaches

I Am In Heaven!
Tuesday is the day that I get to go to the Farmer’s Market near my house. It is a very exciting time of the week for me. But today was even more exciting than usual.

Why? Because today one of my favorite farmers had peaches for sale.

You are probably still having trouble understanding why this day is so exciting for me, so… I will explain.

During the fall and winter, sell predominantly vegetables and very little fruit. In California, where I live, the only fruits available during fall and winter are oranges, apples, and grapefruits; everything else is vegetables.

As spring time comes around, we will have juicy strawberries and a wider variety of citrus and some pears.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the abundance of fruit that I have been able to enjoy up until now, but today…. Today I am in heaven!

Here’s the deal:
Last week we had cherries and apricots.
This week we have peaches.
Next week… Well, who knows? Maybe plums, maybe melons. Whatever it is I know it will be juicy and delicious.

And that is the point I am trying to make:
The day the peaches arrive at the Farmer’s Market is the day that marks the onslaught of all of the juicy and tasty fruits that will be with us until the end of summer.

Mother Nature Has A Master Plan
You make be asking yourself: Why are there more fruits available in the spring and summer and more vegetables available during the winter?

Well, the answer is quite simple. During the summer months it is much hotter than during fall and winter. This means that your body will perspire (sweat) more than it does during the fall and winter. Also, people are usually much more active during the spring and summer.

Because of this increase in activity and perspiration, your body requires more water and beneficial nutrients to keep it healthy and full of life.

Just by coincidence, juicy fruits, such as apricots, peaches, plums, and melons contain a huge amount of water and beneficial nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and thousands of .

Whats In Season
This is what I love about locally grown produce available at Farmer’s Markets and CSA’s (); they only carry what’s in season.

You see, knows exactly what our bodies need at different times of the year and she gives it to us in the form of delicious and nutritious fruits and vegetables.

Farmer’s can’t grow juicy fruits during the fall and winter because our bodies don’t need them. During winter time we require nutrient dense vegetables that are lower in calories and simple sugars.

But now it’s warming up and juicy fruits are starting to flow.

I love this time of year soooo much.

I can’t wait to see what’ll be waiting for me next week at my favorite Farmer’s Market. :)
